Dracaena 8 day adventure

Dracaena is a tour operator which operates with their own lodge on the Cuyabeno River. Dracaena works together with native communities. The lodge is called the Nicky Amazon Lodge. The Lodge consists out of 7 cabins built in traditional Indian style. Each cabin has 2 rooms (single, double or triple) with private bathroom. Together with Dracaena we offer an 8 day adventure tour to the border with Peru. Minimum number of passengers: 5.

Day 1:
At 10am meeting in Lago Agrio. By bus/truck to Tierras Orientales (2 hours). There start the canoe journey down the Aguarico and continue along the Cuyabeno black water river, to our campsite. ( 2 ½ hours aprox. ) After dinner our naturalist bilingual guide gives us a captivating lecture and takes an adventurous night walk, where it is possible to view nocturnal animals and giant insects.

Day 2:
Today we make an early start travelling by motorized canoe down along the Aguarico River deeper into the jungle to our second campsite located on Parrots island. After reaching our second campsite we pitch our tents. On the way we visit the Pacuya River to enjoy some of its flora and fauna.

Day 3:
Starting early! The brisk morning hours are the best time to see the rainforests activity. We take an early morning canoe ride to observe birds and wildlife. After breakfast we travel to our third campsite situated deep in remote jungle (Lagartococha area). Before dinner we enjoy a swim in the Delfin Cocha Lake surrounded by breathtaking tropical scenery.

Day 4:
In the morning to pristine primary rainforest. After lunch, we explore different habitats looking for new species. Here amongst the spectacular scenery we have a good chance of seeing the Amazonian Freshwater Pink and Grey River Dolphins. After dinner a night excursion to search for Caimans and nocturnal birds.

Day 5:
After breakfast, we go to a different ecosystem (Terra Firme forest). We return to our campsite for lunch. Later in the afternoon, we try Piranha fishing. A relaxed dinner is enjoyed at our campsite.

Day 6:
In the morning, we travel by motorized canoe up the Lagartococha River for bird and wildlife watching. After breakfast, we continue along the Lagartococha River navigating to the Aguarico River reaching our fourth campsite located in the Kichwa Community.

Day 7:
After breakfast, we visit the Kichwa Birdwatching Tower. Here above the canopy we see a breathtaking view of the surrounding rainforest. From the tower we can observe a variety of species. After lunch, we travel by canoe up the Cuyabeno River to Dracaena’s campsite. Along the way we stop to observe the enchanting salt lick (exposed clay bank) where hundreds of colourful Parrots and Parakeets feed on the clay to draw the toxins from their bodies. In the late afternoon we relax, reflect and enjoy the sounds of the rainforest.

Day 8:
After breakfast, we travel by canoe down the Cuyabeno River and back along the Aguarico river to Tierras Orientales from where our bus/truck will take us to Lago Agrio 16h00 aprox. Return to Quito by bus or plane.

8 days – Lagartococha: $600,- p.p. with a minimum of 5 passengers.

Transportation from and to Lago Agrio from the Cuyabeno reserve, bilingual naturalist guides, native guide, Nicky lodge with traditional hut accommodation, high quality camping equipment (tents, beds, mosquito nets, rubber boots, raincoats and life jackets), three meals daily, purified water, tea, coffee, hot chocolate and catering for vegeterians.

Not included:
Cuyabeno Park entrance fee ($2,-), transportation Quito – Lago Agrio – Quito, additional beverages, tips and extra meals before and after the trip.
